چکیده
Although urinary tract infection (UTI) may appear straightforward, it can be a diagnostic challenge to pediatricians, nurse practitioners, and pediatric urologists. While there has been significant progress with regard to our understanding of the pathogenesis and host factors related to a UTI, the diagnosis remains complicated by nonspecific symptoms and the difficulty in obtaining an uncontaminated urine specimen. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of a UTI in infants and children is critical especially in children with renal anomalies because delay in diagnosis can result in preventable morbidity and longterm complications associated with renal damage.

Biofeedback treatment uses electronic or mechanical instruments to relay visual and/or auditory evidence to assist a person in gaining control over a physiologic process or function. In pediatric urology patients, biofeedback treatment is used to promote retraining of pelvic muscles. Figure 1 depicts the pathophysiology of dysfunctional voiding. In the figure, increased pelvic floor tension or ...

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common type of nosocomial infection found in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) (Warren, Palumbo, Fitterman, & Speedie, 1991). Yet, there is much to be understood about UTIs in the elderly (generally considered to be those over 64 years old). Just as children are medically not small adults, the elderly are not necessarily older adults. They are unique...

What happens to patients with chronic illnesses who frequently fall “through the cracks” when seeking traditional medical interventions, yet who would clearly benefit from palliative care? Who carries out such conversations with these patients and their families? When do palliative care and quality of life issues surpass the curative medical model? The following discussion of advanced directive...
متن کاملAn tV/^-like Integrin Receptor on Rat Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells Mediates Adhesion to Laminin and Collagen Types I and IV
Extracellular matrix receptors on vascular smooth muscle cells may enable the cells to migrate through both Interstitial and basement membrane matrices during vascular remodelling after Injury. Rat aortic smooth muscle cells attach to surfaces coated with f Ibronectln, laminin, and collagen types I and IV. Members of the ft family of integrin receptors appear to mediate attachment to these extr...
متن کاملConcerning the NJ algorithm and its unweighted version, UNJ
In this paper we will present UNJ, an unweighted version of the NJ algorithm (Saitou and Nei 1987; Studier and Keppler 1988). We will demonstrate that UNJ is well suited when the data are of the ( ) ( ) δ ε ij ij ij d = + type, where ( ) dij is a tree distance, and when the εij are independent and identically distributed noise variables. Simulations confirm this theory. On a more general level,...
